Commakaze History
The Commakazes is a writers group based in Oswego County in the central part of New York State. It began circa
2005, evolving from an informal writers group that was essentially the brain child of Gwen Bixby.
The group (no name) met for a few years on an on-and-off basis, usually at monthly intervals. Most of the time in the
early days, the meeting place of choice was the Fulton Public Library.
Attendance at meetings varied, usually ranging from between five and eight participants, depending upon motivation
and, of course, the whim of the central New York weather, which works wonders in inhibiting wintertime activity.
Members joined. Members left. The group continued on, thanks in most part, to a core of writers who are either
committed, dedicated, and passionate about writing, or are too stubborn to say "no" to their dreams and enter the
real world. (Something tells me that it may be a combination of all those things.)
Growth and restructuring of the group caused it to adopt its name; which was chosen (almost) as a pun, poking fun
on the group's "struggles" in the world of punctuation. ("Comma." Get it? Did a light bulb just go off over your head?
If so, don't fret. You're not the first one to have that happen.)
Today, The Commakazes meet monthly, and are a close-knit group that work well together in offering support,
advice, and morale boosts when needed. Our inspiration is children's literature. However, we dabble in almost all
forms of writing, including: poetry, books, and short stories for all ages.
Members are active in the community and are also involved with such "outside interests" as crafts, the arts, music,
and other creative endeavors.
To sum it up, The Commakazes are friends who care about each other. We are passionate about our work, just as
we are passionate that each group member has her or his needs met. We are serious about what we do; but we
ALWAYS have fun doing it. If you are interested in contacting us, please do. If you would like to join our group, we
can always make room for another. One suggestion, though. I would discourage anyone from the West Coast from
joining. The drive is a tad on the lengthy side.
