"A Note from J.D."
It seems to me that now more than ever people to ask me the question “why do you write?”
And the answer is not quite as simple as one would think.
I write because I need to. When I was little my mother used to give me a blank notebook and a
pen to draw in and keep me occupied when the family went to restaurants. I remember once
saying “I’m gonna write a story!” And I proceeded to rattle off an entire story that I do not
remember one iota of all the while writing scribble letters in the notebook. When my brother and I
would play outside in the summer I would make up epic stories for us to play-act—we fought
armies of the undead, rescued kings, and saved entire kingdoms.
I write because it is in human nature to tell stories. Did you know there is a
version of the “rags to riches” or “Cinderella” story told in almost every part of
the world? These narratives are centuries old and told in places so far apart
there is no way the stories could have culturally diffused which means that all
over the world different cultures have created this same tale. Story telling is
encoded in our DNA, it is part of our lives and I believe that being able to pass
a story onto someone (either written or orally) is one of the very best gifts.
I write because I believe in the power of words. I have seen people who are completely
introverted express themselves through writing. I think that the written word is sometimes
the best and only way for some people to express themselves and let others hear what
they have to say. And on the same token I have known many people who have been
helped enormously by both reading and writing—myself included.
I write because I love to read. I love curling up against the typeface and living between the
pages. I love jumping from letter to letter, punctuation mark to punctuation mark as they lead
me through another world. One of my favorite things is to be able to completely escape into
a good book and close out everything else around me. I hope to be able to bring that
experience to others through my writing.
Essentially, for as long as I can remember I have always created stories, don’t think I
could function if I couldn’t keep creating. I’m inspired by everything around me and the
people I meet. I write for so many reasons grounded deep inside me and hope that I will
be able to inspire this same passion in others.
